Applicants must gain separate and independent admission to both the School for Environment and Sustainability and the Urban and Regional Planning Program, both overseen by the Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Applicants should contact the Admissions Office of each school for application and admission information. A prospective student can apply to the combined program by applying to both programs simultaneously as a new applicant, or a student already admitted to one program can apply to the second program for the dual degree while work in the first program is in progress. Consistent with Rackham policy for student-initiated dual degrees, a graduate of one of the two programs may apply for the dual-degree program status in the other program for up to 5 years after completing the initial degree.
The first two years of study will be divided equally among SEAS and URP; students are expected to spend one year, full-time in each school. These two years are followed by a third year of mixed enrollment. Tuition will be assessed at either the SEAS or Taubman College rate, whichever is higher, when courses toward both degrees are taken in a single term.
Students should work closely with faculty advisors and Registrars in each school to determine precise graduation requirements for each degree. In the Urban and Regional Planning Program each dual degree student will receive a requirements checklist laying out the degree requirements. Because the Program is small, students’ advisors will be knowledgeable about the dual degree curriculum and will provide guidance. In SEAS, students should consult with the Director of Academic Services and/or the School Registrar regarding fulfillment of requirements for the MS. The student advising described here is already provided by both schools, so no additional staff are needed and this will have a minimal impact on current program staff.
